* Note - This series was created way before the Covid 19 outbreak and has nothing to do with the politics of wearing masks in that context!.. I can see how 'Don't Breathe..' may be interpreted as a critique of wearing a mask for the covid situation, BUT IT IS NOT!... Masks protects all of us from getting and transmitting the virus and is a hugely important component in our fight against the virus so - WEAR YOUR MASKS!!
What incentive is there to keep our air clean, our rivers unpolluted and our food free of pesticides from a capitalistic profit motive stand point?.. None, when a buck can be made from the very same detrimental effects caused by man, in need of short term satisfaction.
This piece highlights our social and 'anti' economic system which profits and inevitably encourages detrimental effects to our environment and health.
Since the creation of this piece a growing breadth of literature has been written on this subject. To illustrate here is one published back in 2013 on this very issue and the revolutionary changes that Need to happen from the 'New Statesman'

Update 2019 : As I look back on my 2012 artist statement for this piece, I wonder 7 years later - Is this still true and relevant to the times? or have we managed to move the collective consciousness to where the GDP of a nation doesn't hold precedence and growth is not the be all and end all of our economy.. There have no doubt been positive shifts, however nothing short of a world full blown 'code red' collective emergency push will save the most vulnerable of our flock..
