This piece has seen me through of my most turbulent years thus far and in those years much of my philosophy of how best to portray themes in my conceptual pieces has changed..
William Lonsdale Watkinson's quote
"But denunciatory rhetoric is so much easier and cheaper than good works, and proves a popular temptation. Yet is it far better to light the candle than to curse the darkness."
... ends the epilogue of my bio for a reason.
Thus my episodic progression with 'Hubris' these past 10 years+ were not without some misgivings. It never ceased it's call to my soul to be completed though, and despite the long interval, unfortunately, the themes portrayed are as relevant now as if I had started it 50 years ago (let's just ignore its varying reiterations throughout human history)..
The nourishing life force of our earth is represented by the turkey, here being stripped down to it's bone by a system that perpetuates and sustains the insatiable greed of the few, accumulating power as their plates overflow. Yet still this avarice has no bounds as the earth is continually raped of every morsel, withering in greed's grasp and turning a deathly greenish hue.. Any remorse from the former or resistance from the latter, is keep in check with mans adept ability to conceal unpleasant truths and 'colour' realities, as the abundant swell of food in the foreground glistens an unnatural dyed glow of health.
Meanwhile the proverbial fake carrot is ever at hand to entice and distract the masses, keeping them fighting over themselves just for a taste.. (Hope is provided with a conspiring few in the distance).. Note the inconspicuously hidden blank notes in the over stuffed wallet of our monetary system etc..
On the table, just above the plate of putrid food, dyed an unnatural hue, is carved with familiar conceit
'ANDY WAS HERE'.
(the root origin of the name Andy is Man)
This piece began with a hand drawn preliminary drawing (without the help of any grid etc.),
which was then painted over with an umber underpainting in Acrylic like this,
then a dead layer like this. and finally
then proceeded with multiple, Multiple glaze layers like this !!
