Inspired by philosophical & scientific theories of time and space, this piece seeks to render and merge both dynamical systems theory & relativity with zen philosophy in a somewhat nocturne style, echoing the Tonalism movement of the 19th -20th century ...
'The total nature of the world, is... to all eternity chaos'
~ Die fröhliche Wissenschaft - Nietzsche
Featured is a classic Ford Model T, one of many reoccurring subjects used in my exploration of time and man as a robotized tool in the beginning of the industrialized era (and now).

Henry Ford who was very much one of the pioneers of mass production and the assembly line in the making of his first car the Model T, revolutionized the manufacturing system of the time. Technology was incorporated as a tool to improve the social mobility of his labor force (besides lowering production costs etc..) and his 'Fordism' aspirations took in to account (basically) the well-being of society as a whole..

Now the exploration of what this means to us now in this age of advanced technology where mechanization is ever more taking over the role of humans (like it or not) and where that leaves us as a society is one that many are still grappling with.. It will be nothing short of culture shifting and hopefully we will make the transition smoothly if we take a page from Henry Ford, with a more global, sustainable outlook..

Pythagoras, when he was asked what time was, answered that it was the soul of this world.

Creating "Timeless Chaos" . . .

  • Preliminary sketches were done with reference to varying perspectives of photos I had taken of a red Ford Model T and reconstructed for the concept of the piece..
  • After several colour studies a small Aceo ( 2.5 x 3.5 In) was painted in the initial technique , hue and tone I thought I might paint the larger painting in. You can check out the wip or purchase this small aceo at 'Timeless Chaos' ACEO.
  • The canvas board was then constructed from scratch ( I always prefer constructing my own as I know they have been made with the very best care and quality that I feel, without a doubt, surpasses anything store bought.)
  • Treated copper is then mounted on the W& Newton Artists' Galleria Primed Canvasboard.
  • At this stage I have reevaluated the way I wish the final painting to look and have changed the planned technique I will use.. A small Aceo is done again, to test out this new technique..
  • Work on the actual painting then begins with a predrawing in raw umber oil paint.
  • Inspired by Jeremy Mann's amazing city and landscapes, an initial white layer is laid on with an ink brayer for an interesting textural underpainting and to pull elements together conceptually. Some elements are masked out or avoided.
  • Very thin layers of paint that still reveals the underpainting underneath is then applied first to the sky in a soft scumbled technique, working towards the foreground and car.
  • Some paint is removed in parts that have covered the white underpainting a bit too much and in parts where the copper underneath was intended to be revealed...
  • Layers of paint are applied throughout with this thin scumbled technique, drying completely between layers. Pure hues are applied for more intense color.
  • More detailing and then it's complete!
